Modern Telescopes

Modern Telescopes

Telescopes have been used for hundreds of years and it’s development is largely contributed to Galileo. It was first said to be developed in 1611 and was named by “The Telescope” by a Greek Poet – Theologian. This original telescope that was created is still largely what people associate with when they think of telescopes but it is a far way from what modern telescopes are like.

This original telescope is known as a Refractor Style and consists of a single long tube that the light passes down in a straight line to the eye piece. Telescopes have come an incredibly long way in both design and technology since those early years. Today the most modern telescopes are computerized and you view the image on your screen.

Many include computer controlled so that you can move and save co-ordinates in your computer so you can easily view the same point again and again. The computer controlled one versions also allow you to take a photo or video of what your viewing.

These modern telescopes are based on a Catadioptrics design which was developed by German Bernhard Schmidt. It’s based on a combination of refractor and reflector telescopes. This design is used in a range of scopes from small amateur backyard ones to professional observatory models. The reason you can’t see things in space is because they are such a tiny image meaning they don’t take up much room in your pupil when looking at them. To be able to see them better the telescope makes the image larger to the full size of your pupil. These Modern Telescopes do this by Gathering light through it’s front objective lens, focusing this light and then the eyepiece will magnify the image or light to the size of your pupil.

Today it’s easier than ever to get into astronomy and is especially great experience to share with your family. Decent introductory Small telescopes can be purchased at local department stores for under $100. These will let you introduce your kids to the night sky and give them a good look at what the moon is like. If you want to show your kids more there are several internet sites that are hooked up to more powerful telescopes in observatories around the world. You can logon and in some cases control these telescopes from their website and get the feel of having your own observatory with having to leave your home or spend any money.

Some of the most popular brands of modern telescopes are made by Bushnell, Tasco, Celestron and Vixen Optics.

Hubble Space Telescope

The Good And The Bad About The Hubble Space Telescope

Telescopes are the main tool used for viewing objects that are far away. With this in mind, it is no wonder why man's curiosity of space led to the creation of the Hubble space telescope.

What The Hubble Space Telescope Is

This telescope is positioned outside of the Earth's orbit so that it can orbit Earth. From this position it is able to capture vivid photographs of objects, regardless of how small they are. This is very beneficial to astronomers.

What The Hubble Space Telescope Has Meant To Science

Since the creation of the Hubble space telescope in 1990, there has been significant advancements made in the field of science. There have also been many innovative observations obtained and explanations made. Those people who have worked upon these things have said that they would not have been able to make these advancements without the help of the Hubble space telescope. Furthermore, thanks to this telescope scientists are now able to understand astrophysics.

Problems That Have Occurred With The Hubble Space Telescope

Even with all of the great things that have occurred because of the Hubble space telescope this telescope has had its fair share of problems.

The idea for this telescope was developed in 1946. However, it was delayed until 1990 due to constraints in both resources and funding. Once the idea was launched in 1990 another problem occurred with its main mirror, which was unable to deliver a really good performance.

In 1993 the telescope underwent some more repairs. It was at this time that the telescope was revived so that it could continue to provide research about astronomy for scientists. However, nobody is certain if these repairs will help this telescope to continue to operate properly. For this reason, NASA is still considering launching yet another repair mission. However, they cannot determine if this would be a worthwhile mission because its success is uncertain. This is because a robotics mission is not a guarantee and a repair mission by astronauts definitely would not be a good idea.

The Future Of The Hubble Space Telescope

The Hubble space telescope is expected to reenter the Earth's atmosphere after 2010. Three years after this occurs, the James Webb telescope is set to be launched. However, this telescope is only able to observe infrared thus severely limiting its capabilities in comparison to the Hubble space telescope. Of course, other groundbreaking telescopes with higher resolutions have also been created. Unfortunately none of these telescopes has been as sensitive, or more sensitive than, the Hubble space telescope when it comes to discernible wavelengths.

Buying First Telescope

Research Needed To Buy First Telescope

When it comes time to give in to your interest in the sky or surrounding countryside, buying your first telescope can be an exciting experience, or a disappointing one. With all the different styles and types available, mixed with all the hype by some cheap telescope manufacturers, it is easy to get some bad information about buying your first telescope.

One of the first things to remember when choosing your first telescope is that the pictures on the box were taken by a professional astrophotographer and nothing you will see through your telescope will resemble them. It is like buying a fast food sandwich and expecting it to look like the one in the picture on the menu. Low cost telescopes available at many department stores will have weak mounts, causing the image to be unstable. For a good quality first telescope expect to pay up to $200 for the least expensive.

The main items to look at when buying a telescope are the two numbers that will tell you how well it is expected to work. For a good first telescope, a listing of 20X50 is about average. This means the magnification will equal 20 times what you see with your eyes and the 50 is the width of the length, which is what determines how much light is gathered. The more light the better the image will be visible in the dark and for astronomy, all star gazing is typically done after dark.

Do Not Be Fooled By Fancy Gadgets

The ability to input a star’s location and have the telescope automatically position itself to point in that direction may seem like a nice idea, but you will be paying for a feature for which you may have little use. Computerized systems that use global positioning systems to locate your telescope with you entering the location of stars enables them to find the one you entered. Additional costs will be expended to find the location of the stars and not something you will probably use with your first telescope.

Additionally, by having a computer point your telescope you will miss many views you might catch if you have to manually find the star of your choice. Many times when people buy their first telescope they forget that they might want to use them during the day and have made a purchase based on box information, with no idea how to calibrate the scope for its first use, or how to recalibrate it for daylight use.

It usually does not take long before frustration puts the first telescope back in its box awaiting a return trip to the store. A quality telescope cannot be taken from the box, pointed at the sky and bring everything into sharp view. It pays to read the directions completely before attempting to use the first telescope the first time.

Dobsonian Telescope

Dobsonian Telescope: An Inexpensive Night Sky Observation Instrument

For those who want to expand on their knowledge of the night skies, a simple Dobsonian telescope would be a good starting point. The Dobsonian telescopes are available in six-inch and larger reflective telescopes that have simple mounts to allow viewers to pivot the telescope in all directions so that it is easy to point the telescope anywhere you wish in the skies.

Design Is Well-Liked By Amateur Astronomers

The design of the Dobsonian telescope is especially appealing to amateur astronomers and this can be attributed to the fact that the results are simply amazing given that these are extremely simple as well as rugged large-aperture telescopes that also do not cost a lot. The term Dobsonian actually refers to telescopes that have an altazimuth mount as well as Newtonian telescope tube assembled together along with some of the features popularized by John Dobson.

The Dobsonian telescope is well liked by amateur telescope makers as well, and it is they who led the way incorporating many of its original features into the hugely popular commercial telescopes now hitting the market. Nevertheless, the Dobsonian telescope is not really a single invention and many of its features have already been used before. It was John Dobson who invented its design sometime in the 1950s by combining all the innovations of those times in order to build a mammoth, cheap as well as simple-to-use telescope, which would enable one and all to view astronomical objects.

John Dobson and the San Francisco Sidewalk Astronomers first made the Dobsonian telescope in its classic or hard tube avatar popular in the late ‘60’s with the sole intention of making astronomy readily available to the general public. So, the telescope incorporated large apertures and cost less and was also portable. In fact, the design was so simple that anyone with minimal skills was able to construct a huge telescope using just common items easily available at any hardware store or scrap yard.

The design of the Dobsonian telescope allows the astronomer to observe the deep skies to visually observe star clusters, nebulae as well as galaxies that need a large objective mirror that can gather a lot of light. Of necessity, such telescopes are used away from big cities and in dark locations, which requires them to be more compacting, rugged as well as portable as compared with the more conventional large Newtonian telescopes.

The advantages of using a Dobsonian telescope include its compact size, ease of use and outstanding deep sky performance as also some pretty useful planetary performance. The flip side is that it has non-equatorial drive, it is difficult to point to objects close to the zenith, and there are also several balance issues to be sorted out. All in all, you can’t go wrong with this kind of telescope, and it is good for getting started in astronomy observations.

Discover the Different Parts of a Telescope

Discover The Different Parts Of A Telescope

For centuries people have marveled at the wondering sights of the constellations that can be seen in the night’s sky. What wondrous things could be out there in the vast area in space? Well that question had no answer until one ingenious piece of technology was invented. That’s right the telescope! They have the capacity to view objects from long distances away from earth, some more powerful than others. So how do they work? What are the different parts of a telescope?

Parts Of A Telescope

The are many different parts that make up the telescope and they are in some way slightly similar to the makeup of binoculars. The first part of a telescope is the optical tube assembly(OTA). The OTA is in fact the main tube assembly which is made up of several different optical parts, mirrors and lenses.

The eyepiece is the section that a person looks through and depending on the type of telescope, some may have extra individual lenses located inside. The next part of a telescope is the focuser. The focuser enable the viewer to change his or her focus to help create a cleaner view of the object they are targeting.

The finder is one of the most important parts of a telescope as it enables the user to track down objects in space. Without the finder it would make it almost impossible to find objects that are long distances away.

The Barlow lens is an extra lens that only the most expensive telescopes have. It has a negative effect on increasing the focus length, therefore changing the magnification of a telescope.

The mount is the part of a telescope that holds the telescope in place. There are three types of mounts – the altitude azimuth, the equatorial and the dobsonian. There are other types of mounts but they are generally use for larger, advanced telescopes that aren’t available in retail stores.

The tripod is the last part of a telescope and come in lots of different sizes and varieties. They are made up of 3 legs that are used to hold the telescope up to a height where people can stand to use it. Most telescopes you buy come with a tripod but if yours didn’t then you can generally get one for pretty cheap from most optical stores.

So that’s all the parts of a basic telescope, of course if you were to pay more for an advanced telescope, you would get more parts.

Galileo Telescope

Using the Galileo Telescope To View The Heavens

When you use a Galileo telescope, you are looking at light that is being refracted through one lens, where it is then delivered to another lens, or the eyepiece. Refraction technology is used in Galileo telescopes as well as binoculars and even long camera lenses. This type of telescope uses refracting technology to enable the viewer to see objects brighter, larger and clearer than they ever could with just the naked eye. For that reason, many people use Galileo telescopes to view the cosmos, the planets, stars and whatever else resides in the vast reaches of space.

The Origins

The Galileo telescope originated in Venice around the early sixteen hundreds. The first refraction based telescope was already used in the Netherlands but Galileo invented his own version after hearing about people using refracting lenses. He used what he knew about refraction technology and designed the first Galileo telescope. Galileo then used his telescope to map the heavens, lending much of what we know about space and its contents today. Many astronomers and even hobbyists use the Galileo telescope because it allows them to see things they otherwise normally wouldn’t be able to.

Galileo is also a brand name of telescopes. Galileo brand telescopes use the same technology that Galileo used in his time. Galileo telescopes can be purchased wherever telescopes are sold. You can even find them online. In fact, in the same locations that you can find Galileo telescopes, you can also find binoculars and other high powered lenses, anything that uses the same refraction technology.

Galileo telescopes are perfect for beginning astronomers. So, if you’ve ever looked up at the sky and wondered what was up there, go out and get yourself one of these telescopes. Just like Galileo did in his time, you can use the Galileo telescope to view the planets, the stars, the constellations the stars form and even comets. You never know, you could discover a new phenomenon, comet or even planet or star. If you think you have what it takes to become an astronomer or even if you’re just beginning, a Galileo telescope is definitely for you.

Check your local hobby store for telescopes that use Galileo technology or search online. You’re bound to find one that suits you and in no time at all, you could be looking up into the stars, amazed at things you likely have never seen before, or at least never that close up.

Celestron Telescope

You Don’t Need To Look Far For A Celestron Telescope

Finding the right telescope for you can be akin to taking on a second job. You want to pay as least as you can, but you want a telescope that does what you need it to do. There are many brand manes and a virtual alphabet soup of telescope model styles out there. Celestron telescopes are a good investment. Not only has Celestron been around since 1960, but Celestron telescopes have won awards, seen many firsts and have been used by professional astronomers. Celestron not only makes telescopes, but they import telescopes into America as well.

California Dreaming

Celestron telescopes were born in 1960 in southern California by founder Tom Johnson, who was not happy with the telescopes available on the market for his sons. So he decided to build them one by himself! He kept building telescope after telescope and soon Valor Electronics popped up, which later was renamed Celestron. At that time, the best telescopes had to be entirely hand made. By 1970, Tom Johnson and his designer team figured out how to mass–produce Celestron telescopes so they could be a lot more affordable and understandable.

Tom Johnson sold Celestron in 1980 to SW Technology, but the brand name and quality still can be found today. They haven’t rested on their laurels, but still strive to be the first with new technology to make Celestron telescopes more powerful and more affordable. They have a variety of distributors, retail outlets like Discovery Stores and LL Bean, and Costco and a user-friendly website, Celestron.com.

We’re Not Alone

Now you have your Celestron telescope in your hands in your home. Now, what do you do? If you’re not sure, you can ask Celestron. They have online tech support, telescope FAQ and downloadable Celestron telescope manuals – really a convenience for those who might buy a used Celestron telescope or receive one as a gift. If you’re not online, there is a phone number (310)803-5955 Monday through Friday during Pacific Coast’s business hours (which is a treat for East coast customers!)

Celestron isn’t just about telescopes, but also has a range of binoculars, spotting scopes and all the accessories you never knew you needed. They also have a educational mini-star encyclopedia in Sky Scout which combines GPS with a spoken astronomical encyclopedia. So, if you point it at the evening star, it will identify not only what you’re seeing, but tell you about it. How come they didn’t have this out when I was a kid?

History Of The Telescope

The History Of The Telescope Is Long And Fascinating

The modern telescope is a wonderful tool that allows people to view the celestial bodies up close. The modern telescope is the end result of the long and glorious history of the telescope. Glass was discovered by chance thousands of years ago, and this discovery was an important milestone in the history of the telescope. Thousands of years after the first discovery of glass, this was shaped into the lens necessary for a telescope. This was the next important milestone in the history of the telescope. A man from Holland is the first person to make the use of the telescope available to many others.

The history of the telescope continued after this milestone with a most famous Italian by the name of Galileo Galilei. This Italian scientist is one of the first to use the telescope in his study of astronomy which is a very important milestone in the history of the telescope. Galileo Galilei is probably the first astronomer who made significant scientific discoveries. He used his knowledge and telescope to continue the important milestones in the history of the telescope when he viewed celestial bodies with this device.

People Were Fascinated As The History Of The Telescope Continued

Galileo viewed the craters on the moon, planets and sunspots in his studies. He was also able to see that the Milky Way was made up of stars. During this phase of the history of the telescope the view through the telescope was limited so he could only see a portion of the moon at any one time. The telescope looked like opera glasses at this stage of history. The next important stage in the history of the telescope was made by Sir Isaac Newton who made a different design that could view more at one time. His design was based on the use of a curved mirror that provided closer observation of the heavenly bodies.

The history of the telescope started with these two men who made significant contributions to the development of the telescope. The modern telescope is the result of these brilliant, gifted men and their imagination. There are now small telescopes that people can use in their homes to view the moon, stars and the planets. There are now very powerful telescopes that can view far into the heavens to reveal great information about these celestial bodies. Great observatories are manned by brilliant astronomers who follow in the footsteps of these pioneers.

Coin Operated Telescopes

Coin Operated Telescopes Bring Sights Closer To Visitors

By dropping in a coin many tourist attractions instantly get closer and at most attractions, the presence of coin operated telescopes is almost expected. Places such as the Grand Canyon or Niagara Falls will have them strategically located so visitors can get closer to scenes it would be near impossible to reach by walking.

Most visitors do not pay much attention to the coin operated telescopes they use, they concern themselves mostly with whether they work or not. Companies operating the concessions however, want their user to be happy with the sights so they will use them more than once. The power of coin operated telescopes is noted by numbers followed by the letter X, indicating the power of the telescope. For example, a 10X telescope means the view will be 10 times more powerful than if viewed by the naked eye.

The tradeoff of course, is in the power verses the width of the field of view. The more powerful the telescope, the smaller the field of view, making choosing the power of coin operated telescopes important, determined by the sights to which they will be aimed. If the idea is to show off a wide, panoramic view a lower powered telescope would be recommended. However, if the target will be far away and focused on one item, a more powerful telescope could be used.

Adjustments Limited On Coin Operated Telescopes

Most telescopes offer the user the opportunity to make adjustments to bring the item in closer by adjusting the eyepiece and its relationship to the focal length of the equipment. With most coin operated telescopes there are no adjustments allowed, maintaining the same view for all users. Typically, this is to maintain the integrity of the view, allowing each visitor to experience the save view without needing to waste time making adjustment.

The cost to use coin operated telescopes vary by location with an average of a quarter for about three minutes of use. Depending on the type of scenery at which the telescope is aimed, additional usage may be bought by individual users. For the most part individual sights are observed in a single purchase. This can make paying for the equipment a lengthy process, even with thousands of visitors per day. Ideally, most users will take two or three purchases to be satisfied they have seen everything being offered.

Quality materials and construction helps vendors maintain the equipment, earning money from the purchase for many years. Most owners of coin operated telescopes will be happy to pay off the equipment in one season and have it last a second season to realize a return on their investment.

Cave Telescopes

Cave Telescopes Fast becoming Collectors items.

Thousands of people everyday rely on Telescopes for their work and they hobbies, but in today’s society some specialized brands are quickly becoming incredibly valuable collector’s items. One such brand of telescopes is Cave telescopes.

Cave Optical Company was founded by Thomas Cave until his passing away in 1957 at which point his son Thomas Cave Jr operated the company until it’s eventual closure in 1980. Cave Optical Company was based in Long Beach, California and one of only a few specialist telescopes manufactures in their Day. When performance was your primary concern you had to buy a Cave Telescope. During the 1950’s 1960’s and 1970’s they produced thousands of high quality telescopes for advanced amateurs, professionals and universities.

Cave Telescopes encompassed a huge range of sizes from 6” model in student and deluxe up to massive 18 ½ inch observatory scopes. They also made a large range of styles but specialize in long focal length newtonian reflector telescopes and every scope included the best possible optics that were available in their year. Because of these top quality optics is why today they still work perfectly and are becoming a treasured collector’s item amongst telescope enthusiasts. They traditionally came with extra large mounts to ensure perfect stability of the scope and to provide comfort for the observer when they were being used for long periods of time. Unfortunately these large bases made the telescopes quite heavy and considerably less portable than today’s modern style of scope.

Mr Cave’s Company not only specialized in Cave Telescopes, they also med a specialized range of optical mirrors known by the brand name “Astrola” Astrola mirrors started by being hand shaped and polished every one was finished to perfection. Astrola mirrors were out of production from when the company closed in 1980 but in 1999 Larry Hardin, an ex employee, bought the “Astrola” name from Thomas Cave Jr and has started to mass produce these fine mirrors again.

What You Should Know About Cave Telescopes

Even today 27 years after the company shut their doors Cave Telescopes are known for the top quality reputation they had and have become a sought after collector’s item for today’s telescope enthusiasts. They can be found for sale privately, through astronomy clubs and even on eBay. I would always recommend having a good look at any telescope and assessing the quality it is in and making sure it is 100% genuine before purchase.

Amateur Telescope Making

A Few Helpful Hints On Amateur telescope making

The typical reflecting telescope comes in many different forms, and you can distinguish between commercially made telescopes and those that are the product of amateur telescope making. No doubt, the commercially made telescopes have some of the best optics available, but the need to make a telescope by hand can also provide a viable alternative. Amateur telescope making is an art in itself and it requires that the final work be done by hand.

Use A Six-Inch Mirror, Or An Eight-Inch Mirror, Or A Maximum Ten-Inch Mirror

You may well wonder whether amateur telescope making is possible and if so, how does one begin? For the mirror, use a six-inch diameter mirror because smaller than that, the mirror will be much harder to create as well as it will show less of the night sky. An eight-inch mirror would be ideal and ten inches should be the maximum.

There is no real focal ratio that can be considered to be the best. You need to check on how you plan to use the telescope that you are making, and planetary viewing is different from Deep Space objects, with each being quite exclusive. As a beginning in amateur telescope making you can settle on f/5 which would be ideal for deep space viewing, while f/10 would suit planetary uses. As a compromise, you can settle on f/7 or f/8.

For testing the optics that the amateur telescope maker is creating it may be wise to use a Foucault tester, which anyone can make using just a saw, drill, hammer as well as screwdriver and a soldering iron. As an amateur telescope maker, you can also make use of automatic telescope making software, which can prove to be a fast as well as good method of testing your mirror. You can use the Ronchi Testing software to help you get a good mirror.

At the very least, amateur telescope making means having the complete knowledge about telescope basics, magnification and aperture, and buying telescope making books that can help amateurs learn how to get started. Amateur telescope making means knowing all about mirror grinding, mirror polishing, mirror figuring and parabolization.

You would also need to know about telescope testing, the Ronchi Test, how to assemble the telescope and know more about software that can be used to design as well as test the telescope. And, for the more advanced maker, you would need to know about the Kutter Schiefspiegler, Yolo Telescope and the Tom Waineos’ Grinding Machine.
